A Nigerian-born artist, Gabriel Ajayi is unquestionably one of the most interesting international talents of his time. A disappearing woodworking craft mostly used to decorate furniture is brought alive by his artistic process called Wood Marquetry. His brilliantly conceived contemporary collections illustrate both the range and the innovative thrust of his work.
Gabriel craftsmanship is unique, his figures are simple yet elegant. He uses mahogany, walnut, maple, birch, ebony, macassa, pecan and cherry woods to create his pieces.
His early education was at Yaba College of Technology Lagos, Nigeria, where he received an Associate Degree in Arts and later graduated from Memphis College of Arts and continued training at the University of Memphis in Tennessee.
He creates custom original pieces and commission works. He has done shows in various settings: art shows, galleries, museums and private homes. His works are in the private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe, Canada and undoubtedly, Africa.
Gabriel's work adorns the wall of Michael Jordan, Dionne Warwick, New Edition, former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson, Beyonce Knowles family, and Federal Express to name a few.
The 1991 Nomination by the Nigerian-American Forum based on professional achievements; Certificate of Merit by former Atlanta Mayor, Mayor Maynard Jackson, Atlanta, Georgia; Proclamation by Marvin S. Arrington, President, Atlanta City Council and Commendation by Governor Zell Miller, Atlanta, Georgia; In 1990 he was presented the "Key to the City" of Little Rock, Arkansas by Mayor F.G.Villiness and the Little Rock, Arkansas Board of Directors. Ajayi does original pieces and commissioned works.
